FIFA WORLD CUP WINNER RAPHAEL VARANE TO JOIN HKFC SOCCER SEVENS FESTIVITIES

HONG KONG, 9 May 2025 – Football fans are in for a treat as FIFA World Cup champion and four-time UEFA Champions League winner Raphaël Varane will be a special guest at this year’s HKFC Standard Chartered Soccer Sevens, taking place from 16–18 May at the Hong Kong Football Club. 

The legendary former France and Read Madrid defender will help kick off festivities at The Sportsman’s Dinner on Thursday, 15 May, where he will appear alongside iconic former Liverpool player and manager Graeme Souness, the evening’s guest speaker. 

Varane will also make a special appearance at the tournament pitch side on Sunday, 18 May, where fans can catch him in action during an Exhibition Penalty Shoot-out, and meetand-greet session at the PUMA booth, thanks to tournament sponsor PUMA. 

Varane was one of the finest defenders of his generation, winning the FIFA World Cup with France in 2018, and lifting the UEFA Champions League on four occasions – in 2014, 2016, 2017, and 2018 – during a trophy-laden 10-season spell with Real Madrid, where he also won three La Liga titles. 

He moved to the Premier League in 2021, joining Manchester United for a three-year campaign, where he added the 2023 League Cup to his collection before featuring in the club’s 2024 FA Cup final triumph over Manchester City at Wembley. 

Varane’s appearance adds further star power to what is shaping up to be a standout edition of the HKFC Standard Chartered Soccer Sevens, taking place from 16 to 18 May. This year’s tournament will feature top talent from clubs including Brighton & Hove Albion, Aston Villa, West Ham United, Leicester City, and newcomers AZ Alkmaar, Western United, Larne FC and Macau FA, plus an expanded Women’s Tournament and the return of the everpopular Masters competition.
